The Winter Rodent-Proofing Checklist Every Tampa Bay Home Needs

Roof rats need a hole the size of a quarter. Mice need a dime. Work through this checklist before they find either one.

The Winter Rodent-Proofing Checklist Every Tampa Bay Home Needs

Small holes, big winters

Tampa Bay winters are mild to us and highly motivating to rodents. Cooler nights push roof rats and mice toward heated structures, and they need almost nothing to get in: a quarter-sized gap admits a rat, a dime-sized gap admits a mouse. Rodent-proofing is a game of small holes.

The exterior checklist

  • Seal gaps around pipes, cables and AC lines with metal flashing or hardware cloth, never foam alone. Rodents chew foam like bread.
  • Check door sweeps, especially on garage side doors. Daylight under a door is an invitation.
  • Screen weep holes in block construction with proper covers that still breathe.
  • Cap the chimney and screen every vent, including dryer vents with broken flaps.
  • Store firewood and lumber off the ground and away from walls.
  • Cut vegetation back from the roofline. Roof rats commute by branch and power line.

The signs you were too late

Scratching or running sounds in the ceiling at night. Droppings the size of rice grains in the garage or under sinks. Greasy rub marks along beams. Gnawed wiring or duct board in the attic. Pets staring at walls. Any one of these means the population is inside and growing, because Florida rodents breed year-round.

What professional rodent work adds

We trap and remove the animals already inside, seal every entry with chew-proof materials backed by a one-year warranty on full exclusions, and sanitize the contamination they leave behind so the scent trail does not advertise your attic to the next family. The checklist keeps pressure down. The exclusion ends the problem.
